Cotter Club: Youth of the Year Wins Culinary Scholarship
BGCA IL Youth of the Year and Cotter Club member Krystal Lewis won a $47,000 Associate's Degree scholarship to The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY. After winning the scholarship Lewis stated "Without the help of the Club and my Boys and Girls Club of Chicago family, I would not have been able to do this. The Club gave me the confidence to believe that I could do it, and taught me to not limit myself and not to accept anything less than my best." After completing her Associates Degree, Lewis plans on pursuing her bachelor's degree in the culinary arts.
Founded in 1946, The Culinary Institute of America is an independent, not for profit college offering bachelor's and associate degrees in culinary arts and baking and pastry arts. For more information, visit the CIA Web site at www.ciachef.edu.
Cotter Club - Party City Halloween Bash
On
Friday October 16th, Party City hosted a Halloween Party for 500
kids at the Daniel A. Cotter Boys & Girls Club. The event
featured a giant gum ball machine releasing plastic “gum
balls” filled with candy, a haunted maze, Spiderman, Spider
girl and Sponge Bob. The Club organized different activities in
several rooms at the Club so all of the Club members were able
to participate in the various activities in a rotating fashion.
Party City also provided a Pizza as part of the event.
Club members competed in a costume contest with four winners receiving $25 and $50 gift cards redeemable at Party City. Following the contest, Party City presented the Daniel A. Cotter Club with a $5,000 donation.
In attendance from Party City were Bill Furtkevic, Vice President of Marketing; Lisa Laube, President; Gerry Rittenberg, CEO; Gregg Melnick, SVP & CFO; Bill Bub, VP Store Operations; Barry Morin, SVP & CMO; Mark Sifferlin, VP of Marketing, Anagram.; and Jim Harrison, President, Amscan.
The kids really enjoyed the Halloween party and the staff said that this was the best Halloween party they ever had. The Cotter Club thanks the Party City team and volunteers for their hard work and sponsorship of the Halloween Party held at the Club.

Cotter Club members sang the Bears fight song and cheered during
a pep rally held on the Friday Feb. 1st in honor of the Bears
playing in Super Bowl XLI. The pep rally gave Club members a chance
to celebrate and cheer on the Chicago Bears. Club members decorated
the club, made Go Bears! Buttons and banners. Members played flag
football and everyone had pizza, pop and lots of candy.
Cotter Club: Creating Digital Arts Movie
Cotter Club members worked together to film their Digital Arts Festival Movie entry. Members learned proper lighting techniques on a film set while other members practiced their lines in front of the camera.

Members Abroad-Fighting the War in Iraq
Candace Dobbins, an 18 year old graduate of Carl Schurz high
school on the north side of Chicago, is fighting in the war in
an undisclosed part of Iraq. Candace was a member of the Cotter
club for ten over years and participated in programs like Keystone,
volleyball and softball teams. Cotter Club staff reported, “Despite
being a bit scared, Candace is hanging in there, staying strong,
and hoping to return to Chicago soon.”
William Quaderer, an 18 year old graduate of Lincoln Park high
school who has also been a member of the Cotter Club for over
ten years, participated in every program he could join. From Keystone
to football to baseball to volunteering in or around the club;
Billy was always there to help. Upon finishing boot camp in San
Diego, Billy will begin training at the Special Forces sniper
school located in South Carolina. Recruit William J. Quaderer
will return home the week of Thanksgiving for a brief stay, before
shipping over seas for more training.
Each year the Cotter Boys & Girls Club
of Chicago offers all of its’ members the opportunity to draw/create
an illustration pertaining to the annual golf outing. This year
Desiree Craighead, a 12 year old seventh grader at Schneider Elementary
School, won the drawing contest. Consequently, her piece was placed
on the front of the program and registration materials for this
year's annual fundraiser.
Along with the honor of having her picture displayed on all the
marketing materials for the event, Desiree also received the opportunity
to have her artwork sold to the highest bidder during a live auction.
In years past the winners received dollar amounts ranging from
$600.00 to $800.00, but not this year, Desiree shattered the record
by receiving $1999.00 for her painting! With every bid over $800.00
the entire crowd grew more and more interested and encouraging,
to the point where people began to stand and cheer. In the end
Desiree and her family sat and watched in shock as she racked
up dollar after dollar for her artistic talents.
After the auction Desiree told Cotter Club staff, “I want to buy some summer clothes, but I really plan to save most of it for college.”

On Saturday, June 10th, 100 volunteers from Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC) donated their time and supplies to the Ida Mae Fletcher Life Center and the Daniel A. Cotter Club for their annual Month of Service Volunteer Event. Volunteers thoroughly cleaned the Fletcher site and painted the program areas at the Cotter club. PWC also participated in a similar project at the Robert R. McCormick Club on June 8th. The Boys & Girls Club staff are extremely appreciative to PWC for giving their time and service to our Clubs.
