King Club: Allstate “Extreme Makeover” Event

On Thursday, April 17, 2008, more than 40 volunteers from Allstate revealed an "Extreme Makeover" of the King Club gymnasium and a $5,000 "Tower of Toys" to King Club members. Thanks to Allstate's 50 year commitment to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago the decades old gym is now equipped with new bleachers, basketball hoops, safety pads, scoreboards and a refinished floor. Additionally, there will be new weight room equipment and an upgraded swimming pool.

Chicago Bulls' guard Thabo Sefolosha leads Club members in mini basketball clinic at the MLK Club.
To celebrate the occasion Bulls' guard Thabo Sefolosha led a basketball mini-clinic demonstrating passing, free-throw and shooting techniques. He also took pictures with Club members and signed autographs.

King Club: Hosts Governor Rod Blagojevich Press Conference on Youth Violence Initiative

Governor Rod Blagojevich held a Press Conference at the Dr. Martin Luther King Boys & Girls Club where he announced a $150-million initiative to fight youth violence in Chicago and across Illinois on Tuesday, May 6, 2008.
King Club Director Sidney Johnson delivered opening remarks and was the program emcee. Sidney had the honor of introducing several parents, community leaders, advocates such as IL State Representative Kenneth Dunkin, IL State Senator Ricky R. Hendon, Maria Pesquiera, CEO/President of Mujeres Latina en Accion, The Rev. Michael Pfleger, pastor of St. Sabina's Church, Steve Cole, CEO of YMCA Metropolitan Chicago and Governor Rod Blagojevich. Ezohn Smith, BGCC Director of Teen Services delivered closing remarks.
The Governor's plan, called Community Investment Works, addresses a range of factors contributing to youth violence, including the lack of employment opportunities, lack of safe social and recreational opportunities, and disengagement from their communities.

Annual Haunted House
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Club hosted another successful
Haunted House for its members. Club enjoyed the Halloween activities
tremendously and members of the community showed up in support
of the festivities.
Flagway Program at Willa Cather
The 21st Century program began its 4th year at Willa Cather elementary
program. The YCDC (Youth Career Development Center) program hosted
the Flagway Program that focuses on math literacy. Participating
in the program were 30 Club members between 3rd and 8th grades.

Lights On After School
Dr. King Club members participated in the Lights on After-School Kickoff held at the Englewood Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago on Thursday, October 12, 2006. Over 300 club members throughout the city of Chicago attended the event. King Club members spent the day getting acquainted with youth from other clubs, playing games, eating hotdogs, popcorn, and cotton candy, as the marching band provided entertainment.
