Logan Square Club: Puppet Show

On February 5th Club members completed a puppet art project by creating art work and performing stories based on the characters they created. Jessica Maiorca from the Marilyn G. Rabb Foundation (MGRF) care team worked with about 15 – 20 youth and helped them develop the set, the cast of characters and the dialogue for the puppet show. Among the cast were a wolf, pig, ginger bread boy, horse and carriage and a ram. Club members had a great time telling the stories they created and performing for other Club members and staff.
Logan Square Club – Expressions through Art

On October 23rd, about 12 youth teamed up with Marilyn G. Rabb Foundation care team volunteers and Logan Square Club art volunteer, Dimitri, to create art projects with the resources provided by Paper Source. Club members had a great time being creative, whether it was building a training base, fort, sail boat or just drawing on the plain side. All participating Club members had the opportunity to share their vision with the rest of the group by talking about what inspired them to create their art project.
Logan Square Club - Playground Opening and Safety Demonstration

To help keep kids safe this summer, Children’s Memorial Hospital provided a playground safety demonstration on Monday, June 18 at the Logan Square Club. Safety tips were given by safety expert Dr. Karen Sheehan, Children’s Memorial emergency room physician and medical director of the Injury Prevention and Research Center. Earlier this month, Children’s Memorial coordinated the construction of a new, much-needed playground at the Logan Square Boys and Girls Club. After the safety presentation, Club members enjoyed snacks, balloon animals, and received stuffed animals donated from Kohl’s.
The new playground, which Kohl’s associates helped build, was made possible through a gift to the hospital from Kohl’s to launch the Kohl’s Cares for Kids Safety Network. This year, Kohl’s is donating $833,000 to the hospital. A portion of this donation is being used to support the construction of the new Boys & Girls Club playground along with another new playground being built later this year.
The Logan Square Lions’ Club Candy Day fundraiser took place on October 13th. The Logandale Club organized 9 youth to go out into the neighborhood along with staff to raise money for the blind and deaf through the Lions’ Candy Day. More than $300 was raised through their efforts. The Logan Square Lions’ Club plans to help out with several up coming projects for the blind and deaf in their community.
During the last week of summer programming the entire Logan Square Club participated in a drawing and essay contest. Members age 6-7 were asked to draw a picture of their favorite day at the Club and write a sentence about their picture. Members age 8-9 were asked to write an essay on “Why is school cool?” Members age 10 and up were asked to write essays on “The ways they stay away from drugs, gangs and violence.” The top two boys and girls from each age group were selected. Each first place winner received a book bag filled with school supplies. The second place winners received school supplies as well. Everyone who participated will have their work displayed on the club bulletin boards.
Logan Square Head Start: Program on TV
Channel 44 Telemundo Chicago broadcasted a story about the Logan Square Head Start Parent’s Support Group and the importance of child abuse awareness. The segment called “Nuestra Familia” featured interviews with some of the parents and shared information about the Head Start program. “Nuestra Familia” aired in Spanish on July 13, 2006 at 5:00pm, and then again at 10:00pm. Lidia Garcia, site director for the Logan Square Head Start program noted, “Our parents and staff are very excited about this, and what it will bring to our program.”
Logan Square Kicks off Education Clubs!
As the school year wound down, Logan Square’s members showed great interest in starting up educational clubs to attend during the evenings. Over the past six weeks, members have been expanding their horizons as they learn about a number of different topics from biology to engineering! Many children developed new interests and gained many skills through the program.
One outstanding youth, Emily Gonzalez (10 years old), is a new member at the club who found her home quickly with the evening education clubs. Emily attended all of the clubs and encouraged many other youth to participate. Through the Science Club, Emily learned how to use a microscope, how to create slime, and even put her knowledge of static electricity to the test when explaining to others how lightening was created during a storm. Furthermore, Emily excelled at her times tables and was a champion of many games and tournaments in the Math Madness Club. Her interest in reading helped the Reading Circle read an accumulative total of over 1,500 pages!! Emily also learned about construction concepts and used her knowledge of right angles, bridge strength, and floor plans to design a number of different Lego structures in the Young Engineering Club. Last, but not least, Emily initiated interest in the Logan Square Express Newspaper Club during the final weeks of after school programs. Emily knows the importance of having one’s voice heard and was hoping to capture other members’ opinions and experiences through the club newspaper, which will published this upcoming Fall. The Logan Square Club is very proud of Emily’s eagerness to learn and recognized her at the year end dinner & awards ceremony for her exceptional accomplishments!
