Reed Club: Coach Carter comes to Englewood!

On Thursday, May 24, 2007, Ken Carter “Coach Carter” community activist stopped by the Reed Boys & Girls Club of Chicago took time out from his speaking tour for Ameriprise Financial, Inc. to deliver an inspirational presentation to Club members, parents and staff in the Englewood community. Over 50 Club members prepared for Coach Carter’s visit by watching the inspirational movie “Coach Carter” starring Samuel L. Jackson. “This event is a great opportunity for our youth within the Englewood community to have the privilege of meeting a person like Coach Carter. I believe that we should continue giving thanks and praises to people while there living” stated Darryl Smith, Site Director for the Reed Club.
Mr. Carter spoke to the Club members about setting academic goals by stating that “Knowledge is not power, use of knowledge is power!” The Coach was very interactive with the kids by asking them questions about their lives and letting the kids ask questions about his life. Coach Carter gave out sweatbands, signed t-shirts and promised to send the group t-shirts when he got back to California.
