OUR STORY
The
James R. Jordan Boys & Girls Club and Chicago Bulls Family
Life Center began as the Henry Horner Boys & Girls Club in
1957. An innovator from the start, the Horner Club incorporated
girls’ activities into the program structure as early as
1966. Boys & Girls Clubs of America did not officially open
its doors to girls until 1991. In a desire to increase the benefits
received by near Westside communities, the Horner Club expanded
services to include the entire West Haven community in 1994.
At Michael Jordan’s retirement celebration, in the late
fall of 1994, Jerry Reinsdorf and the Chicago Bulls announced
their intention to build a Boys & Girls Club. The Club would
be in honor of the memory of Michael’s late father, James
R. Jordan, and serve the residents of Chicago’s West Haven
Community. Thanks to a $5 million contribution from the Chicago
Bulls and a personal commitment of $2 million payable over the
next four years from Michael, the 41,000 square foot facility
became a reality in 1996. Today, more than 1,250 club members
attend the James R. Jordan Boys & Girls Club and Chicago Bulls
Family Life Center weekly.
