OUR STORY

The Logan Square Club was founded in the old Shakespeare Police Station in 1948 and moved to its present location, an old synagogue building in 1955. The Club serves residents of the Logan Square, Avondale and Humboldt Park communities.

CLUB DIRECTOR BIO

John Stephan is a seasoned youth development professional with over 40 years of experience. Stephan has assisted hundreds of youth in changing their lives and is recognized citywide as a gang intervention and high-risk youth development specialist. He joined Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago Kiwanis Club in 1968 as a Registrar. In 1975, John was promoted to Program Director and in 1985 to the Club Director position.

Stephan has served as the Club Director at the Logan Square Boys & Girls Club since 1994 and has been instrumental in the development and field-testing of many new national Boys & Girls Club Movement program initiatives such as Keystone Club, Street Smarts as well as initiatives to prepare Hispanic youth for college. John and other Logan Square Club professionals partnered with Cease Fire, a community group that promotes a public health approach to reducing neighborhood shootings and killings, to bring additional gang intervention services to the greater Logan Square community. John serves on the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Gang and Delinquency Advisory Committee. He has also served on planning committees for the OJJDP and Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Gang Symposiums. Click here to view a directory of our Board members.
